How Can Recruiters Attract More Women to Tech Roles
How Can Recruiters Attract More Women to Tech Roles Lets be honest, the stats arent great. Just 17% of people working in the tech sectors in the UK are female. Are employers doing enough to attract more women into tech roles? IT, technology and subjects alike are predominantly studied by males, so is it really the employers fault? As recruiters, what can we do? How can we change this? Ruth Penfold By making sure that we are helping to build gender neutral environments, and creating spaces and businesses where women truly feel like they can be a part of and thrive in. Creating an inclusive space and ways of working has to be number one. We are at the âcoal faceâ of this stuff, and can therefore play an instrumental role in the way the tech world evolves. Itâs up to us to spot opportunities to evolve working practices and re-skill people to move into technical roles. I work closely with some of the female engineers specifically at Shazam to encourage them to become role models, and to inspire other women to consider a career in tech. The next tech generation can also be a more mature group, and Iâd love to see more of that happening. Ruth Penfold, Director of Talent Acquisition at Shazam. Libby Herrmann Start by diversifying and growing the networks you actively take part in â" to include those that have a widespread female population. From here, ensure you are evangelizing the opportunities and the organizationâs desire to diversify the workforce by hiring strong female candidates. For many women tech candidates, it has likely been a while since their last job search. Ensure they are aware of their value to an organization, the culture of the company, their growth potential and the positive implications of making a career change, among other reinforcements. Internally, hiring managers need to be conscious of diversifying their candidate slate and fostering an inclusive environment. Organizational culture, including its reputation built by the hiring manager and existing team, is just as much an attractor as any effort a recruiter could put forth in outbound strategy. Libby Herrmann, Client Relationship Manager at WilsonHCG. Amanda Bell Thereâs a lot of discussion in the diversity and inclusion community about how to bring more diversitygender, racial, ethnic, among othersinto companies. But we often forget that itâs not just about bringing people of diverse backgrounds into companies: we must make sure we focus on inclusion once candidates become employees. Make sure your company is, in fact, inclusive. If you arenât showing that you truly live your values surrounding DI, no amount of diversity recruiting efforts will be effective. You can begin by asking employees: âWhatâs going well?â, âWhat could be better?â, âWhich resources can we invest in to make sure all employees feel welcome, encouraged, and supported at work?â Once you build the foundation of an inclusive environment, attracting more women to a supportive team becomes much easier. Amanda Bell, Director of Recruiting at Lever. Angela Bortolussi I remember years ago when I attended my first tech meetup. And while the vast majority of attendees were male, I also was able to connect with a handful of women looking back though, it was a bit overwhelming meeting with 60+ men and just 6 women. Woman or man, people ultimately learn to code and join the industry for the same reason (and same with recruiting) so, if we can show how women are already here doing âthe jobâ we donât necessarily need to make a âspecial caseâ I think what we need to do is keep voicing the importance of encouraging women to get into technology. How do we do that? Well, in general workplace culture also needs to transmit a message of inclusiveness and diversity including gender diversity. But, some really easy stuff (we recruiters) can do: letâs be a presence and support women in their IT careers. Angela Bortolussi, Partner at Recruiting Social. Rebecca Fraser Recruiters can support this more than drive it I believe. This includes supporting in coaching their organisations to consider the best way to write job adverts, ensuring they are gender neutral. A recruiter can also work with their clients on developing HR policies that support working mothersâ transition in to the work environment, or considering ways of making their work place flexible. Flexible work options do not mean less work, a lot of the time it actually results in improved productivity and quality of work as the individual is highly engaged in the work environment and the work output. Rebecca Fraser, National Executive Committee, Career Development Association of Australia. Liz Sebag-Montefiore Diversity in hiring is important for all organisations but it is particularly difficult to attract women to digital and tech roles. Candidates of both genders increasingly seek flexible and family friendly working policies. Ensure that job adverts donât use gendered language or imagery that puts off female applicants. When employers champion female role models, they inspire applicants to see what is possible in a tech career and to aspire to what have traditionally been seen as male-dominated roles. It pays off because more diverse teams do better financially and compete better in the market. Liz Sebag-Montefiore, Director and Co-Founder 10Eighty. Lysha Holmes Recruiters can ensure they understand the brief and requirement of the roles as they would any job, regardless of discipline and ergo of the gender for the incumbent applicant. Engage with your audience through social media channels, steering away from stereotypical and generic adverts and stating the facts to the entire audience you wish to capture, not just women. Lysha Holmes, Owner and Recruiter of Qui Recruitment R2R. Caroline Stokes The billion dollar question: recruiters will have greater success when biases are removed at screening stage through technology, have their role optimized for success in the first 90 days through coaching, the employer demonstrate true gender equality and thereâs more support and systems in place for women and men to manage life challenges. Caroline Stokes, Founder of FORWARD and The Emotionally Intelligent Recruiter. Poonam Mawani I personally feel that this should be influenced at schools and universities so that by the time jobs are applied for then the status quo isnât gender but merely the ability to do the job. Letâs all educate our children that it doesnât matter whether you are male or female but that they can do whatever job they want to do. Poonam Mawani, Director at Azuki Accounts.

Bite-Sized Benefits A Digestible Guide to Healthy-Looking Teeth -
Bite-Sized Benefits A Digestible Guide to Healthy-Looking Teeth - We only get one set of forever teeth, so it pays to look after them. And todayâs society is filled with ways that you can do just the opposite: sugary drinks, chocolates, snacks, lollies, coffee, cigarettes the list goes on and on. A great many people also loathe to visit the dentist, for various reasons from cost to anxiety to simply being too busy going about their lives. Yet if you want a winning smile for years to come you need to take certain steps in your life to ensure that your pearly whites remain just that. So if you donât want to hide your smile behind your hand every time you meet someone new, absorb these bite-sized benefits and read about how you can maintain healthy looking teeth! Teeth-Whitening Tips There are many ways you can work towards a brighter, happier smile. A teeth whitening kit is a good way to start. You can save a trip to the dentist by purchasing one of these and doing it yourself in the comfort of your own home. There are also teeth-whitening toothpastes, mouthwashes and other products that you can find on the shelves of your local chemist or supermarket. Some of these are more effective than others so it sometimes pays to get the top of the range, after all youâre investing in your smile here. Brush, Brush, Brush If you want to have clean and white teeth, then you must brush. Dentists recommend brushing at least twice a day. If you can find time to brush a third or fourth time, even better! Use a fluoride-based toothpaste donât fall for the conspiracy theories about fluoride, theyâre all nonsense. A tip many people donât know though is that you should wait half an hour after you finish eating before you brush your teeth as eating food generates acid in your mouth which can actually erode your enamel if you brush while the acid is still there. So wait a while after breakfast and dinner before brushing. Floss and Mouthwash Brushing is only the first line of defense when it comes to a white and shiny smile. Use dental floss to get out any food particles that may be stuck between your teeth. Pay extra attention to your molars as these are used to grind and smash food into digestible parts. If you find your gums are sensitive to thin flosses and it hurts or causes bleeding, you can buy a special floss that is perfect for sensitive gums. The next step is a good mouthwash. Again, pick one that contains fluoride. As mentioned above you can opt for a whitening mouthwash that contains a bleaching agent which helps to make your teeth whiter, brighter and better. Dentist Visits Oh no, the dreaded dentist! Yet if youâre really concerned about your grin, you need to have a professional examination and clean every six months, or year at the least. A dentist has one job and thatâs to protect and keep your teeth healthy. Some dentists can even perform a professional whitening service on top of a regular check up and clean, for an additional cost of course. If you have private health cover you can add general and specialist dental as an added extra which may mean you pay only a small gap for whitening treatments. Grin to Win So there you have it. You can grab teeth-whitening products online or in store, and donât forget to brush, floss and rinse with mouthwash. A regular check up and clean at the dentist will keep your smile bright, and dentists can also perform professional whitening as well.

Decorate Your Apartment Quick Bathroom Face Lift (Part 2)
Decorate Your Apartment Quick Bathroom Face Lift (Part 2) My goal in decorating our apartment is two-fold. Make our apartment feel more like a home Become more daring in my design choices (think pattern, colors, textures, etc). I have a running list of decorating ideas, which you can about read here. As for this post, it is the part 2 of a part 1 that can be found here. Check it out to see how I began to conquer my to-do list. Today, I feel like the Cowardly Lion, at the end of Wizard of Oz, after he gets his bravery medal. Why? Well, I committed to a bold color for the bathroom! (High fives anyone?!) I knew I wanted a cheery pop. Let me emphasize the POP of color is not HUGE but is a step in the right direction. I was thinking green, yellow, or coral which made me think of the beach, summer time, and warmth. Here are some Pinterest finds that were my guiding inspiration: Which colors do you like? I found some pretty towels at various stores. Now I need one of those cool towel warmers to to hang them on!â I settled on Drum Roll PLEASE a warm, happy marigold. The marigold color is just perfect and I feel like it is a little sunshine in our window-less bathroom. BONUS! When I was looking at towel colors at BBB, I found this patterned beauty. She is out of the classic Cape Cod look but I am committed to trying new things, right? Have you tried anything new lately?

The Old Boys Network - It Stinks To Be On The Outside
The Old Boys Network - It Stinks To Be On The Outside âInside every working anarchy is an old boysâ networkâ â" Mitch Kapor Iâve loved this quote ever since I first read it in Wired magazine years ago. My interpretation is that even within a society where there isnât any government or authority, which some would call chaos, thereâs an order and some form of an âold boys' networkâ is alive and well. Even if we donât all see it, itâs in there. The âold boys' networkâ exists in many realms, not just gender, race or politics. It simply occurs when thereâs a group thatâs the âinâ group. As in: in power, in charge, in control, or simply in-the-know about how things work. Hereâs a story to illustrate what I mean. Where weâve lived in the US and the UK, most of the school runs are done by the moms. But since Iâve always worked full time and needed to be at the office by 7:30am, my husband would do the drop-offs and pickups. It was all going well until that one Wednesday. My husband Len did what he did every Wednesday, which was give Kristen the Brownie scout outfit to put on. Thatâs because the Brownie troop met every Wednesday afternoon. After breakfast, Len drove Kristen to school and dropped her off at the school gate. When Kristen walked into the classroom, she was the only girl wearing her Brownie outfit. She hung around the cloakroom for a while, feeling embarrassed but knowing that she had to go into the classroom eventually. Then â" thank goodness! â" Olivia walked in, also wearing her Brownie outfit. Lovely, wonderful Brownie outfitted Olivia! She and Kristen ended up walking in together. Crisis averted. As it turns out, Kristen and Olivia were the only two kids in the class whose fathers did the school run. What had happened was that the Troop leader had fallen ill the night before and called one of her fellow moms to say, âNo Brownie meeting tomorrow,â who then called around to let the other moms know. However, Len and Oliviaâs father were not in the mom network and didnât get the information. The epilogue is that two of the moms who are also neighbors promised to call the two dads going forward, and Len also made more of an effort to check in and ask what was going on. I rather suspect Kristen also became more independent as a result and started taking responsibility for checking with her classmates! So, not a bad outcome in terms of learning life skills. Itâs not always intentional Sometimes, the old boys' network is intentionally biased. But often, it can just be lack of awareness that other people donât have the same perspective, information or resources that we have. In fact, Iâm sure there have been many times when Iâve been so preoccupied that Iâve appeared to exclude or ignore others without intending to. And the more senior you are, the more that can hurt the morale of those around you. For example, there are times at networking or offsite events when Iâve stayed in the comfort zone of chatting with people I know, and they happen to be other senior MDs. Instead, I should have been talking to the mid and junior level people. We probably looked like the âinâ group and made them feel like the âoutâ group. Not so good. And when Iâm bouncing ideas off of people, I tend to go to the same 3-5 people I know and trust for their judgment. That can look like Iâm favoring an âinâ group as well, when itâs just simpler and quicker for me. What can we do? Here are some things Iâm going to do to lessen the impact of the old boys' network phenomenon. Be aware. Iâm going to stop being so preoccupied with my own âstuffâ and start being more conscious of whatâs going on with people around me. As in be more present. Notice whoâs feeling left out. Reach out. When Iâm part of the âinâ group, Iâm going to reach out to people who are not. And when I do, it will be to help them decipher whatâs going on, decode the secret language, and feel included in the natural flow of information. Thatâs what two of the moms did at Kristenâs school. Itâs a small shift in behavior to add one more person to your list of where you care, but it can have a hugely positive impact. Give the benefit of the doubt. And when it feels like Iâm on the outside of the network, Iâm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and approach it as the non-sinister version. That way, Iâll be able to reach out to them rather than having it feel like Iâm back in high school with my lunch tray walking by the âcool kidsâ tableâ and wondering where to sit. So, now that weâre all grown up, why not make room for the new kid at our lunch table and start building bridges from both sides? I think it can make us all more successful. What do you think? What will you do when youâre in the old boys' network and when youâre on the outside looking in?

How to Flawlessly Capture the Right Details on Your Resume - CareerAlley
How to Flawlessly Capture the Right âDetailsâ on Your Resume - CareerAlley We may receive compensation when you click on links to products from our partners. The road to success is always under construction. Lily Tomlin Author Byline: Jessica has a true passion for the job seeker, evidenced by her desire to share everything she can with everyone she can about resume writing and interviewing. Author Website: http://www.greatresumesfast.com If you follow our blog regularly, you know that we stress the importance of including detailed descriptions of your previous professional accomplishments in your resume. While this is a simple idea, understanding how to execute it effectively trips up a lot of people as they write their documents. With that in mind, lets play a round of Good details vs. Bad details. Good details The types of information resumes should includebut often do notare things like the following: -How many people report to you? -How much money did you make for your last company? -How have you saved your employers money in the past? -Were you recruited or promoted by previous employers? -What special projects or tasks have you been chosen to complete? -What have you accomplished that was above and beyond your job description? Bad details When people include too much information on their resumes, it typically falls into these categories: -The verbatim name of the department and supervisor you reported to. Unless you report directly to Mark Zuckerberg or someone equally famous, you can use a general title like VP-Marketing or Director of Branding to convey your status in the company. -Outdated details about your college experience. If youve been out of school for ten years, your college GPA is old news. Ditto the name of the specific school of your university that you attended, unless its a highly ranked, nationally recognizable program, e.g., the Wharton School at University of Pennsylvania. -Personal details about your life. If gaps on your resume are due to something like taking personal time off to care for an ill family member, it doesnt matter what his or her diagnosis was. Keep your explanation as brief as possible. An effective resume strikes the right balance between providing specifics that clarify how valuable you are as an employee, while at the same time generalizing your accomplishments in a way that makes sense to a wide audience. To be sure your resume doesnt include bad details, make it a point to let another set of eyes proofread it.
